Hip Dip Surgery Recovery Timeline

Fat Transfer Recovery: Day by Day

Days 1-3

Significant pain at the donor site (abdomen, flanks, thighs — wherever fat was harvested). The injection site (hips) is tender but less painful than the donor site. Pain medication is required. Most patients stay home, rest, and limit movement. Compression garments are worn continuously. Sleeping on your back or stomach only — no pressure on the treated hip area.

Days 4-7

Pain decreases to manageable levels. Swelling peaks around day 5-7 and then begins to subside. Some patients return to desk work at day 5-7 if they can stand and move periodically. Compression garments continue. The area looks dramatically fuller than the final result — this is swelling plus surgical overfill, not the outcome.

Weeks 1-2

Return to office work is possible for most patients. Sitting for extended periods is still uncomfortable — patients compensate by shifting weight, using cushions, or standing periodically. No exercise. No heavy lifting. Compression garments continue.

Weeks 2-4

Swelling continues to resolve. The first real contour emerges as the surgical overfill and swelling decrease. Light walking is permitted. Still no strenuous activity. Compression garment typically continues through week 4.

Weeks 4-6

Gradual return to exercise, starting with low-impact activities (walking, stationary bike, light upper body). No lower body resistance training yet. Compression garment typically discontinued at week 4-6 depending on surgeon preference.

Weeks 6-12

Full return to exercise including lower body resistance training. The area may feel "lumpy" as fat settles — this is normal and resolves over weeks 8-12.

Months 3-6

Final result. All swelling resolved. Surviving fat has stabilized. Photograph your outcome at 6 months as a permanent baseline.

Implant Recovery: Key Differences

Implant recovery is generally 2-3 weeks longer than fat transfer recovery because the surgical dissection is deeper and the implant itself requires healing time. No donor site pain (no liposuction), but more pain at the implant site. Return to exercise at 4-8 weeks vs. 4-6 weeks for fat transfer.
